Rain...you are my nemesis

Current Music:
Current Mood: Energetic
Current Location: Point Loma, CA

I got off work this morning and it was raining. I thought to myself, ok it's raining now but surely in 8 hours when I am ready to go on my 13 mile run the rain will have let up. Even if it's just sprinkling I can get my run on. So I go home, get some sleep and wake up to some pretty consistent rain, nothing out of control though. It takes me about an hour after I wake up to get ready for a run. Especially on a long day like today because I like for my body to wake up and I like to hydrate some. Anyway, after that hour I got all ready to go on my run and as I was getting ready to leave I could hear the rain from inside the apartment. I thought to myself, "not good". I then went and looked out the window to see exactly how bad it was, sometimes the rain sounds worse than it is. Not this time. It was a torrential downpour! Ok, maybe not torrential but it was coming down hard and heavy...nothing that I wanted to go out in. I was disappointed that I wasn't able to go out on my run but luckily I am able to push it back a day because tomorrows forecast is looking awesome. No rain, little wind, and partly cloudy skies...perfect.

The Olympics are coming to an end this weekend and I'm a little disappointed because I love watching these athletes perform! They get me so motivated to keep going and to train hard and smart. One thing that I will be starting up again now that the Olympics are over though is reading my books. I've been slacking on reading because there is just so much Olympic coverage! I may have to start at the beginning of the book I was reading before the Olympics, Americans In Paris, Life & Death Under Nazi Occupation by Charles Glass is a collection of true stories of Americans that decided to stay in Paris during WWII after the Nazi's invaded but before the U.S. had entered the war. I love reading about that era. It's such a fascinating period in history and the bravery of the people in the face of evil is so inspiring.

I have the next four days off of work and I'm very excited for all the things we have planned preparing for the move. I'm even more excited that my leave got approved for the week of the move so I will only have to work two days next week before getting 9 days off! It's going to be so nice not to have to worry about saving the world for those days. I can just focus on family, friends, and our new house.

This is getting outta control

Current Music: The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black
Current Mood: Relaxed
Current Location: Point Loma, CA

I found myself looking up what the current men's American record for distance in a 24 hour race is. By the way, the record 162.459 miles set by Mark Godale in 1999. Then I thought to myself, "Well, I think I could beat that." My head is getting outta control. Across The Years is going to be my first ultra and I'll be lucky to run 100 miles which is my goal and my brain is telling me that I can set American records...get out of my head brain! You're going to mess up my concentration!
This is my current conversation with my brain:

Me: Slow your roll brain!
Brain: You can be an American record holder!
Me: I need to remain focused on the current goal of completing the San Diego Rock 'n' Roll Marathon.
Brain: With all due respect, and remember I'm saying with all due respect, that idea ain't worth a velvet painting of a whale and a dolphin gettin' it on.
Me: Brain, that's from Talladega Nights
Brain: Oh yeah? Well...SHAKE AND BAKE!!!
Me: Huh?
Brain: THAT JUST HAPPENED!!!
Me: Brain, you're friggin' crazy...wait, does that make me crazy?
Brain: You're the one talkin' to me...
Me: Shut up.

Then I was reading February's Runners World magazine and I read this Chinese Proverb: "A journey of 100 miles begins with a single step". I have a feeling I'm going to need to remember that proverb over the next year.

I have a nice long 13 mile run planned for tomorrow. I'm going to try to have a nice consistent run. This will be my first run at that distance so it's going to be a good indication of where I'll be halfway through the San Diego marathon. The race is still 14 weeks away so I'll be able to improve on tomorrow run a lot.

I'm very happy that I only have one more day of work before my next four days off. We've got a lot planned for these next four days in order to prepare for the move. It's going to be crazy busy and I'm sure it'll be slightly stressful at times but it will all be worth it once we're finally moved into our new place.

Gettin ahead of myself

Current Music: 30 Seconds to Mars - Kings and Queens
Current Mood: Overworked
Current Location: Point Loma, CA

I've definitely got my hopes set on getting accepted into the Across the Years race. Today during my 6 mile run that's all I could think about. I started calculating how far and how fast I would need to run in order to meet my goals. I'm thinking that I should be able to complete 25 miles every 5 hours. If I can stay consistent at that pace I should be able to hit my goal of 100 miles and still have a 4 hour cushion. As of right now I'm planning on running this race with as little stops as possible. My time in the Navy has helped to train my body into staying up for long hours so that shouldn't be a factor. What worries me the most as of right now is, will I be able to stay consistent for that long.
After I had spent a few minutes thinking about ATY during my run, it occurred to me that the P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Phoenix Marathon is January 16, 2011, two weeks after ATY. I was hoping to run that race as my first race of 2011. (Yes, I think about stuff that far out) If I do end up running ATY though, I'm not sure I'll be in any shape to run the Phoenix RnR. I might be able to muster up enough strength and energy to run the Half-Marathon but I'm still not 100% confident that I'll be able to do that and I don't want to pay $90 only to have to forfeit because I'm barely able to walk, let alone run a Half-Marathon. The cheap registration cut off for the Phoenix RnR isn't until September so I'm just going to have to see how my body feels and make a judgment call from that.
As I'm sitting here writing this it occurs to me that I might be getting ahead of myself, am getting ahead of myself. I need to remember that I haven't been selected in the lottery yet and even if I am, the race is still 10 months from now. I need to remain focused on the current goal of completing the San Diego Rock 'n' Roll Marathon which is only 3 1/2 months away. After I finish the San Diego RnR I can turn my attention to ATY (assuming I get in). Until then, I have to remain in the now and focus on the immediate future.

All I can do is wait...

Current Music:
Current Mood: Relaxed
Current Location: Point Loma, CA

Today was a pretty relaxing day. Something I needed considering I was going to be working for 12 hours tonight. Erin's mom, Carla, came out today and thankfully, Natalie was a lot more receptive to seeing her. I think it helped that she had just had a two hour nap before seeing Carla. It took a few minutes for Natalie to get warmed up to her but once she did, it wasn't long before the two of them were playing together and reading books together. It was very cute.
I got some exciting news last night. The Across the Years 72/48/24 hour foot race, which is held over the New Year holiday and the 2 days prior, was cancelled last year but is back on for this year. So I've signed up for the 24 hour race but because so many people sign up for this race, it requires a lottery to get in. I won't know if I'll be running the race until the results of the lottery come out on May 1st. I already know what my goals are going to be for this race if I do get in:

1) Run/walk/crawl my way to the finish
2) Run for at least 23 hours
3) Complete at least 100 miles in those 24 hours

I still plan on running the Las Vegas Marathon on the 5th of December but if I get in to ATY I'll be using the marathon as training run leading up to ATY instead of trying to improve on my time from the SD marathon in June.

I'm very excited and my running prep is even more important to me now. I'm going to have to start logging more miles, but I'm also going to have to walk that fine line between increasing my miles and not injuring myself.

So much to do, so little time

Current Music: The Airborne Toxic Event - Sometime Around Midnight

Current Location: San Diego, CA

I meant to blog last night but we had such a long day yesterday that I ended up falling asleep on the couch at like 9 p.m. I can't remember the last time I went to bed that early. But like I said, we had a busy day yesterday. First we went to the housing office and signed the lease for our new place. It's official we are moving out of this wretched apartment and into Navy housing on the 8th of March. Less than two weeks! After signing our lease, which took over an hour, we went to our new house and took measurements of some of the rooms because we needed to know how we were going to keep Natalie from getting all over the house and hurting herself. We now know how many baby gates we need to buy and electrical outlet covers and every other thing you can think of. It's going to cost a fortune to baby proof that place but no cost is too great to keep our little girl out of harms way.
After our trip to the house we went to a couple of home decorating stores because Erin has big plans for this new place. No joke, she has a list of things that she wants to buy that is two pages long. It's crazy! Most of it has to do with the kitchen and as Erin explained it to me the kitchen is "her area" and "it doesn't concern me". Personally I think it does concern me a bit because I will still have to look at it, but Erin has good taste when it comes to decorating so I'm not too worried.

I made a video of Natalie moving around in an adorable ballerina outfit. She's so adorable and it's not going to be long before she starts walking. Here's the video:

One final bit of news, the official race course for the San Diego Rock 'n' Roll Marathon has been revealed! I've been waiting on this for a couple of months now. It looks like a very fun and fast course. I can't wait until June 6th when I can get out there and run it. Check it out here: http://san-diego.competitor.com/files/2010/02/sd10_coursemap.pdf

Common Sense should always prevail

Current Music:
Current Mood: Awesome
Current Location: Point Loma, CA

So yesterday I mentioned that I had another beef with something I had read in the news but didn't want to make yesterdays blog entirely out of rants so I saved it for today. So here it is. Apparently in Queens, NY a 12 year old girl, who by all accounts is a well behaved student was arrested for doodling on her desk. She didn't write anything profane, just that she was there and that she loved her friends. Now, instead of the principal taking it upon himself to rectify the situation, he picked up the phone, called the police, and had the young lady arrested. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? How is it that anyone could think to themselves that this offense is a police matter. As if the police don't have serious issues to deal where actual crimes are being committed. Now this girl has a juvinile record and has to perform eight hours of community service, write a book report and an essay on what she's learned from the expericance. You know what I've learned? That principal is an idiot and needs to be fired.

Alright, that's enough of that. Lets move on.

Ok, so if you recall, yesterday I had to get my H1N1 shot because the Navy requires all personnel to be vaccinated. Well apparently my bosses decided that I didn't get my vaccine in a timely manner so I was given another written counseling so that  I could be made aware of my...shortcoming. Now, the last one I got I totally I agreed with because I totally deserved it. This one however, I take issue with. I'll explain. The counseling and my issues are as follows:

"On Jan 14th (got my seasonal flu shot and told to wait at least 30 days before the next shot) and Feb 11th (wasn't at work so I didn't get the email, plus no one called to tell me) you were directed to ensure your FLU shot was completed. 16 FEB 10 make up Seasonal Influenza vaccinations as well as H1N1 vaccinations were made available to the staff who had not already received them. You were directed by IS1 (Name) to ensure that you completed your shot no later than 16 FEB (not true and have the email to prove it) and to provide the paperwork to the chain of command. The vaccinations have been available at several clinics since November 09 (except for when they ran out due to the shortage) and COMTHIRDFLT had a previous SHOTEX on 14 Jan 10. You procrastinated (I wouldn't call extenuating circumstances procrastination) and did not ger you shot until both your LPO and department LPO directed you to. This is not acceptable behaviour and we expected you as a front running second class (<- I must be doing something right) to manage your time and priorities better."

I was ready to argue my point because I knew that it was coming but I decided it was pointless and I was too tired to care because I was coming off another 12 hour overnight shift. In the end it doesn't even really matter because 1) I got the shot and 2) this written piece of paper is meaningless and has no bearing on my future in the Navy.

Besides this little speed bump, today was actually a good day. I got a nice 6 mile run in and Erin being the awesome wife that she is went to the farmers market and got me the organic smoothie that I had wanted to buy last week. She bought me a 32oz bottle of the most disgusting looking but awesome tasting drink and it's supposed to be really good for me too. Here's what's in it. Greens (Kale, Chard, Collard Greens, Romaine Lettuce, Green Leaf Lettuce, Spinach, Dandelion Greens, Parsley) Pure Water, Apple Juice, Apple, Banana and Flax Seed. It's really good and I recommend that everyone at least try it.
Check out their website here: http://www.greenfixsmoothie.com/

Today is my last night of work and then I get the next four days off. I can't wait.

A tragic day in Texas

Current Music: John Lennon - Imagine
Current Mood: Content
Current Location: Point Loma, CA

Today I tried to read the rantings of someone who had lost all hope. The pilot that flew his plane into an IRS office in Austin, TX. I say "tried to read" because about half way through I got so tired of this guys pointless rants that I just skimmed the rest. There was one thing that stood out to me though and that was when he called the events of 9/11 a "nightmare". So obviously this guy understood to some extent that there is a difference between right and a wrong. For him to turn around and do a similar act is just despicable. As if this country hasn't suffered enough heart ache with planes being flown into buildings. What has this coward accomplished by killing himself? Nothing. He's ended the lives of at least two people, destroyed a building, and placed the lives of the rescuers at risk. I understand that some people get dealt a bad hand in life but to take out your frustrations in this way is inexcusable. I don't condone suicide, but if you're really bent on killing yourself, do the world a favor and do it in the privacy of your own home.

I don't think I will ever understand what drives people to perfrom these inexplicable acts. There are so many people in the world that are suffering far greater than the majority of the people in this country and there are so many options for recourse in this country that it just doesn't make sense to me. I don't see how this man's life could have possibly been worse than the victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti, the people in the Peoples Republic of Iran who have to live under the tyranny of the dictatorship, or if you want something closer to home, the entire city of Juarez, Mexico that currently lives under the constant fear of the everyday violence of the Mexican drug cartels. Life in the United States is incredible, even in the worst of times. That's why so many people are constantly trying to sneak into this country. The citizens of this great nation should appreciate that fact before going out and killing a bunch of people because they think they have it bad.

Ok, enough time wasted on that guy...moving on to happier things. I do have another rant to go off on but I think I'll save that one for later. One rant a day is enough I think...

Today was a pretty good day for me personally. I had to get my H1N1 vaccine yesterday morning after working for 12 hours so that kind of sucked but fortunately the line was short and I was able to get home 2 1/2 hours after getting off work. I know that I just talked about trying not to procrastinate and postpone my planned daily activites but today I decided to postpone my run for today because my sleep time was cut short by this extra time at work. Today was supposed to be an off day but I'll do my run today when I wake up. I needed the sleep yesterday these last couple of days have been crazy at work and have taken a lot out of me. Thank goodness for coffee and soda because without the caffine I don't know how I'd make it through the night.

I'm looking forward to these next four days off of work. We don't have a lot planned so I will be able to catch up on much needed rest. One thing we do have planned though is preparing for our move next month. It's really only 3 weeks away so we're going to try to start packing up some of the non-essentials and also start planning on what we need to baby proof the new house. When we went on the walk through on Wednesday we took pictures of each room so we would know exactly what we would need to buy so that Natalie doesn't electrocute/drown/hurt herself. Erin's mom and grandparents are also going to come out and help us move so hopefully it will only take us a couple days to get everything out of our current place and into our new place. At this point though, I'm definitely going to be takeing at least a week off of work so that we can get settled in. I'm not complaining though. I could use the time off of work.

It's been a week? Seriously?

Current Music: Silence, except the clicking of the keyboard
Current Mood: Tired
Current Location: Point Loma, CA

I have been slacking on my blogging once again. I can't believe it's been over a week since I last put anything up. Though, in all fairness I didn't have a whole lot of time over the last few days. When I started this blog I wanted to try and write everyday. Turns out it's easier said than done. Blogging has bcome the inactive equivalent of what running is to my active side. I want to do it as often as I can and when I miss a day I feel as though I've let myself down for not completing a goal. There are days when I try to justify it by saying it's ok, I'll do it tomorrow. But I procrastinate enough as it is...these two activities can't fall into that web. It's so hard to get out of. My mom came out to for a visit so I spent all my free time with her. By the end of each day I was just too tired to get on the computer. Honestly, I think I only got on the computer 3 times while she was here, and each time it wasn't more than 10 minutes. I don't get to see my mom all that often so I didn't want to waste the time I did have sitting and staring at a computer screen. Besides, I do that enough at work.

One thing we did do however was a lot of shopping. We went all over town to different stores, Erin bought stuff for the house, I bought running clothes, and my mom almost bought one of those electronic cigarettes...but decided to wait until she got home to see if she could buy it there instead. We did find a cool little farmers market...and when I say little...I mean very tiny with about 20 vendors. But what they had there was amazing. We bought homemade tamales, homemade toffee, and this really good garlic pesto dip. I almost bought this juice made of a bunch of green leafy plants. It sounds gross, looks worse but actually tastes really good. Unfortunately, by the time we got to that booth we were all out of cash. I'm thinking I might go back this week and get some.

While my mom was here we celebrated my birthday. Its official I'm old. I don't feel old though so that's good. I like to think that even though I'm 26 years old now...I probably have the maturity level of an 18 year old. I want to stay young at heart for as long as possible. It's getting harder to do though. Being a father and having responsibilities can really change a person.

Erin and I also had the opportunity to do something that we don't get to do very often, and that is go out to dinner...just the two of us. I really enjoyed our time out together eating and conversing about our lives. I love spending time with her, and though we were both pretty focused on our conversations, Natalie wasn't far from our minds.

Work has been a little crazy lately. There are so many changes being made to the way we do business that sometimes it can get overwhelming. But being in the Navy now for 6 years, there is one thing that I've learned, and that is that if you want to stand out amongst your peers, you need to rise to the challenge. Yes, there is sometimes a sharp learning curve and it takes time to adjust to the changes but eventually you get used to the change and you adapt.

I've gotten back on track with my running. The rain has moved out of San Diego for the time being so the weather has been absolutely wonderful and perfect for running. I've mentioned this before but I don't think it was on this site, but I love meeting people when I run. Just the other day I was finishing up a 6 mile run when an older gentleman ran up beside me and struck up a conversation. Chuck, (that's his name) is training for the Boston marathon and has also signed up to run the Half-Marathon at the SD RnR. We only ran together for about a quarter of a mile but it's just that kind of thing that makes me want to keep running. The camaraderie among runners is something that I don't see very often, even in the Navy.

Finally, Erin and I have confirmed that we are definitely moving at the beginning of next month. We have been approved to move into military housing and even had the opportunity to walk through the house yesterday. It's a nice little two story house and though I have reservations about how some of the rooms are laid out, I am excited to move in. I think that once we get our stuff into the house we'll have a better idea of how to adjust to the layout of the rooms. The biggest benefit however, will be that Natalie will have her own play area and we will not have to be chasing her all over the house to make sure she doesn't get into something she's not supposed to. I'll be very happy once we are all settled in.

Even I'm not perfect...

Current Music: Mos Def - Fear Not Of Man

Current Location: San Diego, CA

So today started out in a kind of lousy way. First, I woke up late so I had to rush to get ready for work. It's never good when you start to stress about the day from the moment you wake up. I sped all the way to work, hoping the entire time that I wouldn't get pulled over and thankfully I didn't. What I did run into though was traffic. It was the traffic entering the base. For some reason the gate was backed up for a quarter of a mile. With 8 minutes to get to work, it took 5 of them to just get through that line. Luckily I got a really close parking spot and I made it into the office right on time. So here I am thinking that the day just might get better from this point on...wrong. It turns out that I forgot to do something pretty important. Let me start from the beginning...

Yesterday afternoon as my division officer was leaving he informed me that we were supposed to have a couple visitors come into our office that night to use some of our systems. He wanted to me inform the person that was going to be relieving me that these guys were coming and that everything had been prepared for their arrival. Guess what I forgot to do...tell my relief everything about this. Now in my defense when my relief came I was dealing with another urgent issue and so by the time I had finished putting out this fire, I had completely forgotten about the visitors. Of course being busy is no excuse because we have a log book that we're supposed to write all information so that we have a written record to help us in our turnover in case we get so busy we forget something. I had forgotten to do that too. This is exactly what I complain about other people doing to me, information doesn't get passed on to me and isn't written in our log and I get caught on the receiving end of a crap storm. This time I was the person that I hate, only the crap storm still ended up on my plate. Epic fail on my part.

So naturally this morning when I got in my division officer wanted to know why my relief hadn't known about the visitors and why they were working out of another office and not ours where we had set up for them. Well, I had no response other than I had completely forgotten. So I was given a written counseling to reprimand me for my failure. It isn't a huge deal because this written counseling doesn't go into my permanent record, however I hold myself to a higher standard than this so I was upset with myself for not paying attention to detail in a matter that probably had broader effects than I know of.

After this things started to turn around. The rest of the day was fairly uneventful which allowed me to work on planning our move to our new house. The weather cooperated with me today and I was able to go to on a run. I hadn't run in 5 days so I knew that I would be hurting a little bit. But damn, I didn't think I was going to hurt as bad as I did. My lungs were on fire by the end of my little 3 miles. Then I looked at my time...21 minutes! On a run that was half up hill. Well damn, no wonder my lungs were on fire! I was running faster than I normally do. So I was pleased with my efforts, despite the burning I felt.

My mom arrived this evening so that was nice to come home to. Plus, Natalie was still awake which is rare. It was a perfect way to end my up and down day. My wife, daughter, and mom all here with smiling faces as soon as I walked in the door. I couldn't have  asked for anything else.

Tomorrow is my last day of work for this week and I already can't wait for the day to be over. Four days off with my family, and my birthday. It's going to be a good weekend.

Today was an absolutely insane day at work. I was getting tasked to do all kinds of stuff from every which way. On top of that I still had to try to train one of the new guys that's going to be standing this watch soon. I have to admit...we didn't get much training done. I barely had time to go get lunch! I still did of course. A delicious Greek Chicken Wrap from the Point Loma Beach Cafe and OB. Definitely recommend that place if you're in the area. Having the trainee watch me during such a busy day, gave him a good idea as to how he needs to manage his time and also how to deal with certain people that we interact with on a daily basis. Not that he needs to be taught that much about how to act in the Navy...the guy has been in longer than me!

Today was also Erin's birthday! I would have loved to spend time at home with her but of course I had to work. The next best thing would have been to have a slow day at work so that I could email her all day and we could keep each other company like that...but of course it had to be out of control at work today. So we really didn't get to celebrate her birthday very much today. I brought home her favorite Mexican food, (Santana's of course), after work, and also got a Cold Stone Ice cream cake for dessert. It was all very delicious, even if it was a late dinner. Just another negative aspect of my job...gone for 12 hours a day I miss so much here with the family.

We also found out today that we will most likely be moving into Navy housing on the 8th of March! We're very excited to be getting out of this apartment, mainly because of the noisy neighbors, the occasional bug problem, and I will love being a lot closer to work. The place they offered us is kind of on a main road so I'm going to see if they have one in a quieter area of the neighborhood and hopefully that won't effect our move in date. No matter what though, we will be moving soon and I know that we all will be so much happier.

I downloaded a trial photo program tonight, Aperture3 for Mac and I've been messing with a little bit and it's actually really cool. I might have to get it once we have the money...it's crazy how much these programs can cost! Here's a little sample of what I did this evening with just a quick 10 minute trail. From what I can tell, it's pretty user friendly and if I have any questions, Apple always has instructional video's on their website on how to use their products. Of course if anyone out there recommends this program or thinks there's something better out there you're opinion is definitely appreciated.

My mom comes tomorrow! I'll be at work when she gets here and I'll be working the next day too. Luckily she has the next 6 days of for the holiday coming up so even though I'll be working, I'll still have 4 days to hang out and catch up...I suspect she's not too worried about me working for those first couple of days though...she says that she'll just have to spend more time with Natalie. Yeah, I'm sure she'll manage without me for a couple of days.

It was raining today...again. So I didn't get a run in...again. Hopefully tomorrow will bring a little more sunshine to the area, although the forecast is predicting more rain. I might just have to suck it up tomorrow. It's been 4 days since my last run...time to man up and deal with it...it's just a little water, right? Yeah...freezing water. HA! I complain about a little bit of rain and wind but then I see the weather report for D.C. 12 more inches of snow on top of the 20 they already got! Definitely time for me to suck it up.

IPod App

So I found this app on my iTouch and I wanted to try it out.
Not much went on today, just another long day at work. People continue to fail to complete the most menial of tasks and pretty soon it's going to start effecting me and the little time that I get to spend with my family. Hopefully I can continue to stand out and eventually be taken off the watch and move to more of a supervisory role.
I've trained a couple of new guys so hopefully one of them will take my spot.

Sea World and the Superbowl!

Today was fun. Erin and I met up with her friend Angela and her family again today to spend the day at Sea World. Actually, Erin and I were a little early so we went on a little drive of Ocean Beach. I took her to Sunset Cliffs and we looked out over the Pacific. It was very relaxing...although Sunset Cliffs don't really live up to their name at 9:30 in the morning. We spent pretty much the whole day at Sea World and Natalie had a really good time. Well, at least she seemed to. She only got grumpy a couple times and she was even able to take a nap in her stroller for about an hour. Erin bought lots of cool new stuff for Natalie so she could have it to remember her first Sea World experience. She probably won't remember much since she's 8 1/2 months so it was completely justifiable to buy all the stuff. Besides, Anheuser-Busch saved us $138 in entrance fee's by allowing all military to enter the park for free. We pretty much did everything there was to do at the park. The dolphin show is under construction until May so that was kind of a bummer but we saw all the other shows. Angela, her husband Drai and their daughter Neveah went on the Wild Rapids ride and got completely soaked...at least I thought we did until Drai and Neveah got back from the Atlantis ride and Drai looked like he had been thrown into a pool. He was literally dripping wet. I was very happy that I wasn't on that ride, but felt bad for him because it was the end of the day, the sun was starting to disappear behind some clouds and the breeze was picking up. Luckily for him, we all left very shortly after.

After we left the park Angela's family went back to their hotel and then we met up back at our apartment to watch the Superbowl that I had set to record on the DVR...or so I thought. It turns out that in my haste to set the DVR to record, I only recorded the pre-game show and most of the first quarter. So by the time we got home halftime was ending. I set that to record so we could watch the last half of the game after we'd watched the first quarter. We ordered the pizza and watched what was recorded and I'm happy to say that my team won. By my team I mean the team I was rooting for...I really have nothing invested in the Saints but congratulations to them. WHO DAT!

In all the excitement of this weekend, I only have one disappointment and that is I didn't get any running in. I would have liked to go today, but I didn't get up early enough. This just means I'll have to work out a little harder this week to make up for the weekend.

I go back to work tomorrow for the next four days. I'm not really looking forward to it because I just feel like this weekend went by so fast. I am, however, looking forward to celebrating Erin's birthday on Tuesday, my mom coming for a visit starting Wednesday, and my birthday next Sunday!

Countdown To San Diego Rock 'n' Roll Marathon: 17 Weeks!

Good times with good friends

Went to the Supercross races at Qualcomm stadium this evening with some of Erin's friends who are in town for the weekend. I'd never been so it was a very cool experience...although I could have done without the pouring rain. Thankfully, our tickets were in a part of the stadium that was covered so we only got a little wet walking from our car to the stadium.
Another long day tomorrow, going to Sea World and then coming home to watch the Super Bowl. I also have to run sometime tomorrow...when that's going to happen is anyone's guess but I have to make the time since I skipped out on today's run. I'm OK with it though, because it was raining...who want's to run in the rain? Not this guy. Hope the marathon is a bright and shiny day because otherwise, I'll be miserable.
I didn't hear back from anyone on the riddle so either 1. Nobody could come up with the answer. Or, 2. Not enough people read what I write to care. Oh well, either way I still have the answer for you:

Q: There are 53 bicycles and 4 men in a room, one man gets shot in the superior vena cava. Why?

A: Bicycle is a brand of playing cards, there are 52 cards in a deck (Not including the jokers). The four men are playing poker. One man is hiding an extra card up his sleeve. He is found out by one of the other players and shot in the heart (where the superior vena cava is located) for cheating.

Countdown To San Diego Rock 'n' Roll Marathon: 17 Weeks 1 Day

A new day, a new blog

So here it is, the new site and already I'm liking it so much better than my LiveJournal blog. Blogger just allows for so much creativity. Plus, this is just so much more user friendly! I mean, I'm no html expert but I can understand enough to survive. Not that you need to be an expert for this site anyway.

Anyways, today was a really good day. Although I thought that it would be disastrous when I woke up this morning. I had to go in to work for a monthly meeting. It wasn't really all that informative and the information that did get put out, probably could have been sent out in an email but I guess I understand their need to get together once a month just so that everyone can get on the same page and voice any questions, or opinions. The good thing about me having to get up so early for this meeting is that it got me out of the house early. I had a lot to do today because I had to buy the wife a birthday present and a Valentines Day gift. We usually only get each other one gift for the two celebrations but this year we've been very fortunate and felt that as long as we didn't overspend we could get each other one gift for each day. It took me about 4 hours to finally get her presents picked out and of course I had to get myself a couple things as well. I got myself a wallet that matches the Navy's new cami's...I know, I'm kinda gay. I also got a new Nike T-shirt that just says "RUN" on it...simple, just like running is.

One thing about wife and I that everyone should know is that when it comes to receiving gifts, she and I are both very impatient. So even though our birthdays and Valentine's day isn't until next week...we celebrated today and we gave each other our gifts. I got a new T-shirt, an Itunes gift card, Godiva chocolates (YUM!), and a new leather bound journal and pens so that I can write a poem should the inspiration ever strike me...(Increasingly unlikely). Despite my skepticism, I love my all my gifts and I'm happy that I got to open my presents today instead of next week.

The rest of today was pretty much uneventful, after all, how can you top getting gifts? You can't. It's just not possible. So we just relaxed which I'm completely OK with because the rest of this weekend is going to be packed with activities, between running, going to the MotoX races, and SeaWorld...I don't know when else I would have had time to rest before going back to work. All these activities are all under the assumption that the heavens don't open up and soak us with the rain that has been predicted for this ENTIRE weekend...although, I do believe it rained tonight so hopefully we'll get a break...at least on Sunday because I kinda do want to go to SeaWorld. It helps that wife and I get in free because I'm military and Anheuser-Busch loves the military. So thank you to the Anheuser-Busch Co. but I'll take your free park entry, but I'm still a Sam Adams guy.

Ok, finally a riddle to leave you all with provided, at least to me, by the "Wire-Tap" Podcast featuring Jonathan Goldstein. It's called "53 bicycles in a room". Here it goes:

There are 53 bicycles and 4 men in a room, one man gets shot in the superior vena cava. Why?

Good Luck.
